Maddie's Fund discontinued new funding to Maricopa County as of October 31, 2009. The Pet Rescue Project will continue to work on current goals using unspent grant funds, set-aside money, and new funding from other sources. The Project will provide shelter statistics to Maddie's Fund through October 2012.

Encompassing Phoenix and 46 other municipalities, Maricopa County maintains a population of more than three million. With its warm climate and many universities, Maricopa County has a particularly high rate of seasonal young and elderly residents.

Maddie's® Pet Rescue Project

Maddie's® Pet Rescue Project is working with Maddie's® Spay/Neuter Project in Maricopa County to end the killing of healthy and treatable shelter dogs and cats countywide within ten years.

Maddie's® Pet Rescue Project in Maricopa County, AZ is a coalition of animal control agencies, traditional shelters and adoption guarantee organizations working together to increase adoptions.

The coalition's lead agency is Arizona Animal Welfare League and SPCA, working with Almost Home Boxer Rescue, Arizona Animal Rescue & Sanctuary, Arizona Humane Society, Finding Fido, Foothills Animal Rescue, HALO, Home Fur Good, Maricopa County Animal Care & Control, and Sun Valley Animal Shelter.

Maddie's® Spay/Neuter Project

The Arizona Veterinary Medical Association administered the program in Years 1 & 2; the Arizona Animal Welfare League and SPCA in Years 3-7. Sixteen private practice veterinary hospitals and four non-profit/government clinics provided spay/neuter surgeries to low-income county residents.
