MaddieCam: Nevada Humane Society

Reno, Nevada (MDT)

Nevada Humane Society was one of the first shelters in the country to initiate progressive ideas- all to increase lifesaving. From helping to keep pets in their loving homes, to creating a foster program, to offering low-cost spay/neuter services, to educating people on adoption so that a shelter is their first option, to increasing positive marketing of animals- they made changes that made a difference. Now, in 2016, over 12,000 homeless pets come through their shelter along with nearly 10,000 other pets who receive medical care and other services. Since 2007, when their no-kill shelter policy was established, over 80,000 lives have been saved. In 2014, they expanded lifesaving efforts to include Carson City.

Thanks to the amazing support of the community and the hard work of the dedicated staff, volunteers, and rescue partners, they have achieved dramatic results. Washoe County is now one of the safest communities in the U.S. for homeless animals and received the Maddie's Community Lifesaving Award in 2012.
