(Alameda,CA-December 2000) Christmas will come early to the California Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA). Maddie's Fund has just given CVMA an additional $1.07 million for phase 2 of its Feral Cat Altering Program (FCAP) due to the huge volume of feral cats being altered by CVMA doctors. To date, more than 50,000 feral cats have been altered throughout the state of California by 931 member veterinarians.
The FCAP Program began in August of 1999. Originally, the program was to receive a total of $3.2 million dollars over three years for altering 60,000 feral cats.
But the number of surgeries has far outstripped expectations, and Maddie's Fund dollars have kept pace. With this latest award, Maddie's Fund has given the FCAP program a total of $3.865 million. With one more funding year to go and a potential of 60,000 additional surgeries, Maddie's Fund contributions could reach an unprecedented six million dollars! (Maddie's Fund provides $30 for every male cat surgery and $70 for every female cat surgery. Of the surgeries performed so far, approximately 60% have been female).
"Our hats are off to the dedicated doctors who have done so much to improve the lives of feral cats" says Maddie's Fund Veterinary Consultant, Dr. Laurie Peek. "The FCAP program is one high price for success we're happy to pay."
