Maddie's Fund - Press Room

(Alameda, CA – July 2003) Maddie's Fund®, the Pet Rescue Foundation (www.maddiesfund.org), has awarded a one-year grant of $49,500 to support a new Shelter Medicine Program at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University. The program will be named Maddie's® Shelter Medicine Program after the beloved Miniature Schnauzer of Maddie's Fund founders Dave and Cheryl Duffield.

Maddie's Shelter Medicine Program will include three components -- veterinary student education, continuing education, and research:

A pre-clinical course will be designed for veterinary students to introduce them to different shelter models (no-kill, traditional shelters, animal control) and the medical/behavioral problems commonly found in each. Students will also be given externships in no-kill facilities and research stipends to study information of benefit to no-kill shelters.
Continuing education programs for veterinarians on the local, state and regional level will be developed as will continuing education programs for veterinary technicians.
The epidemiology of infectious disease will be investigated in urban and rural shelters. New information will be used to detect and prevent illness in foster and no-kill dogs and cats.

Established in Ames, Iowa, in 1858 as the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm, Iowa State was the first state institution to found a veterinary school. Surrounded by rural communities and family farms, Iowa State is located in central Iowa, 30 miles north of Des Moines.
