MADDIE'S FUND PRESIDENT TO RECEIVE
HUMANE AWARD FROM THE AMERICAN
VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION

(Alameda, CA-June 27, 2000) Maddie's Fund President Richard Avanzino will receive the American Veterinary Medical Association's coveted Humane Award at a ceremony to be held at the AVMA's 137th Annual Convention on July 22 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Humane Award was established in 1984 in recognition of humane efforts on behalf of animals and exceptional compassion for the welfare of animals by a non-veterinarian or non-veterinary association. Avanzino was nominated by the California Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) and selected by the AVMA Executive Board. Avanzino is only the thirteenth individual to win the Humane Award. He joins the company of such widely recognized and highly respected animal advocates as Temple Grandin, Ph.D., and actress Betty White.

"I feel honored and deeply grateful to have been selected for this prestigious award," says Avanzino, "but I think the credit really belongs to the CVMA and its 880 member veterinarians participating in the Feral Cat Altering Program. These dedicated and heroic folks altered more than 30,000 cats in just one year, making FCAP the most successful project Maddie's has funded. I'm the lucky beneficiary of the project's success."

In addition to the beautiful Tiffany crystal Award, AVMA will gift Avanzino with $500 cash.
