Maddie's Spay/Neuter Project in Alachua County

Maddie’s Spay/Neuter Project in Alachua County, Florida is working with Maddie’s Pet Rescue Project in Alachua County, Florida to save all of the community’s healthy shelter dogs and cats within five years.

The Alachua County Veterinary Medical Association (ACVMA) is administering Maddie’s Spay/Neuter Project to increase spay/neuter surgeries and reduce shelter intakes. The first year goal is 3,665 surgeries.

As lead agency, ACVMA is responsible for informing community practitioners about the project, enrolling those who are interested, gathering baseline statistics, sending out guideline and reimbursement forms, processing claims for payment, promoting the program and sending monthly statistics to Maddie’s Fund.

To date, the ACVMA has enlisted 26 veterinary hospitals to provide spay/neuter surgeries to low-income county residents. The cost of the surgery to owner/caregivers is $10 per cat and $20 per dog. Maddie’s Fund is contributing between $20 and $90 per surgery depending upon species and gender. ACVMA veterinarians participating in the program will contribute the remainder of the cost by reducing their fees to help more low-income pet owners spay/neuter their companion animals. Clients must show proof of low income with a Medicaid card and there is a limit of six pets per household.

Maddie’s Fund has awarded $220,000 to support the initial phase of the program’s first year which began in July, 2003. As goals are achieved, the Foundation will make up to $3.1 million available to Maddie Projects in Alachua County over five years.
