Maddies®Spay/Neuter Project in Mobile, Alabama is working with Maddies Pet Rescue Project in Mobile, Alabama, to save all of the communitys healthy and treatable shelter dogs and cats within ten years.
The Alabama Veterinary Medical Association (ALVMA) is administering Maddies® Spay/Neuter Project to increase spay/neuter surgeries and reduce shelter intakes. The first year goal is 4,229 surgeries.
As lead agency, ALVMA is responsible for informing community practitioners about the project, enrolling those who are interested, gathering statistics, sending out guideline and reimbursement forms, processing claims for payment, promoting the program and sending monthly statistics to Maddies Fund®.
To date, the ALVMA has enlisted 21 veterinary hospitals to provide spay/neuter surgeries to low-income county residents. The cost of the surgery to owner/caregivers is $10 per cat and $20 per dog. Maddies Fund® is contributing between $20 and $90 per surgery depending upon species and gender. ALVMA veterinarians participating in the program will contribute the remainder of the cost by reducing their fees to help more low-income pet owners spay/neuter their companion animals. Clients must show proof of low income with a Medicaid card and there is a limit of six pets per household.
Maddies Fund has awarded $253,740 to support the programs first year which began in January, 2005. As goals are achieved, the Foundation will make up to $4.6 million available to Maddies Projects in Mobile over seven years.
