Maddie's® Shelter Medicine for Veterinary Support Staff Apprenticeship at Charleston Animal Society
Are you a veterinary support staff member who works for a shelter or rescue? Are you interested in increasing your skills and knowledge as it applies to shelter medicine? Do you want to learn how to integrate shelter medicine best practices in your own shelter or rescue to improve the quality of care and save more lives?
Who Should Apply?
These apprenticeship opportunities are for veterinary support staff who work in shelters or rescues and are interested in learning shelter medicine best practices at one of the top shelter hospitals in the country. These apprenticeship opportunities are designed for the veterinary assistants to implement what they learn at their home shelter or rescue.
How Does it Work?
This apprenticeship is five days, plus travel. Students will receive 5 inspiring days at Charleston Animal Society in Charleston, South Carolina, packed with information that will cover a broad base of topics how to integrate these shelter medicine best practices in their own shelters or rescues. When selected, students will be required to read and watch the on-line materials before going to Charleston Animal Society.
Here is an outline of the topics that will be taught. This is subject to change.
- Day 1: Disease Transmission, Sanitation, Housing, Public Health Intro, Shelter tour (1.5 hours)
- Day 2: Medical Health; Records Keeping and Daily Rounds
- Day 3: Intake and Animal Handling
- Day 4: Disease Management, Outbreak Management, Contagious Diseases
- Day 5: Identifying Stress, Protocol Design, Planning, Emergency Medical Care
A $1,500 stipend to cover travel and lodging will be awarded to the organization of each student chosen.
