Maddie's® Shelter Medicine Consulting Technician at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine offers skills, education and training to shelter animal veterinarians and staff with regard to primary problems most commonly seen in animal shelters. These include:
- infectious disease management and animal husbandry
- principles of infection control and management
- principles of disinfection and physical plant maintenance
- common behavioral problems associated with the shelter environment
- shelter design as it relates to disease and behavioral issues
- policy/legal issues that affect shelter veterinarians
- population management
- principles of epidemiology
- public health
- community outreach/education/wellness programs
This grant was originally structured as a three-year residency program in shelter medicine. The program was redesigned in 2010.
