Maddie's® Spay/Neuter Project in Alachua County, Florida

Maddie's® Spay/Neuter Project in Alachua County, Florida is working with Maddie's® Pet Rescue Project in Alachua County, Florida to save all of the community's healthy and treatable shelter dogs and cats within ten years.

The Alachua County Veterinary Medical Association (ACVMA) is administering Maddie's® Spay/Neuter Project to increase spay/neuter surgeries and reduce shelter intakes.

As lead agency, ACVMA is responsible for informing community practitioners about the project, enrolling those who are interested, gathering baseline statistics, sending out guideline and reimbursement forms, processing claims for payment, promoting the program and sending monthly statistics to Maddie's Fund.

To date, the ACVMA has enlisted seven veterinary hospitals to provide spay/neuter surgeries to low-income county residents. The cost of the surgery to owner/caregivers is $10 per cat and $20 per dog. Maddie's Fund is contributing between $20 and $90 per surgery depending upon species and gender. ACVMA veterinarians participating in the program will contribute the remainder of the cost by reducing their fees to help more low-income pet owners spay/neuter their companion animals. Clients must show proof of low income with a Medicaid card, and there is a limit of six pets per household.

Since Maddie's® Spay/Neuter Project began in July 2003, 879 surgeries have been performed.
