Maddie's® Pet Rescue Project in Maricopa County, Arizona

Funded in November 2002, Maddie's® Pet Rescue Project is working with Maddie's® Spay/Neuter Project in Maricopa County to end the killing of healthy and treatable shelter dogs and cats countywide within ten years.

Maddie's® Pet Rescue Project is a coalition of animal control agencies, traditional shelters and rescue groups working together to increase adoptions.

The coalition's lead agency is the Arizona Animal Welfare League. Other partners include the Animal Rescue Center, Arizona Animal Rescue & Sanctuary, Arizona Humane Society, HALO, Maricopa County Animal Care & Control, SOAR, and Sun Valley Animal Shelter.

Encompassing Phoenix and 46 other municipalities, Maricopa County is one of the fastest growing counties in the nation, with a population of more than three million. Home to Arizona State University, five community colleges and a growing number of retirement communities, Maricopa County has a particularly high rate of seasonal young and elderly residents. The county also has a large population of Hispanic and Native American residents.

In baseline year 2000-2001, Maricopa County rescue and sheltering organizations impounded 105,976* dogs and cats and euthanized 59,241.** Of those, approximately 5,706 were healthy.

At the end of Year Five, Maddie's® Pet Rescue Project in Maricopa County had reduced healthy shelter deaths to zero.
