Maddie's Spay/Neuter Project

Funded in November 2002, Maddie's® Spay/Neuter Project in Maricopa County is working with Maddie's® Pet Rescue Project in Maricopa County to end the killing of healthy and treatable shelter dogs and cats countywide within ten years.

The Arizona Animal Welfare League is administering Maddie's® Spay/Neuter Project to increase spay/neuter surgeries and reduce shelter intakes. Private practice veterinarians, spay/neuter clinics, the Animal Defense League of Arizona's Spay/Neuter Hotline, the Arizona Veterinary Medical Association, and the Arizona Cat Assistance Team are all participating in the effort.

Nineteen veterinary hospitals are currently providing spay/neuter surgeries to low-income residents of Maricopa County. The cost of the surgery to owner/caregivers is $10 per cat and $20 per dog. Maddie's Fund is contributing between $20 and $90 per surgery depending upon species and gender. Veterinarians contribute the remainder of the cost by reducing their fees to help more low-income pet owners spay/neuter their companion animals. Clients must show proof of low income with a Medicaid card and there is a limit of six pets per household.

Two spay/neuter clinics are also offering surgeries to low-income residents. Surgery prices range from $15 to $90 depending on species, gender and breed.

Because of the particularly high number of pit bulls and pit bull mixes euthanized in Maricopa County shelters each year, Maddie's® Spay/Neuter Project started a Pit Bull Spay/Neuter Pilot in 2004. The pilot gives caregivers of pit bulls and pit bull mixes special incentives to have their dogs spayed or neutered. Not only are the surgeries free, guardians receive $20 for having the surgery performed. In the pilot's first year, 1,042 pit/pit mix surgeries were performed.

Total surgeries in Year Three: 3,504
  • 2,462 surgeries were performed by private practitioners

Total surgeries after three years: 6,384
