Rabies kills approximately 70,000 people annually worldwide. Animals enter our shelters daily with unknown rabies vaccination status, and have possibly had contact with rabid animals. This discussion, led by Dr. Andrew Newmark, Chief Veterinarian at Lollypop Farm, will include a history of rabies, rabies in New York State, shelter policies regarding bite wounds (animal and human), pre-exposure and post exposure vaccinations, and current treatments for people with symptoms. The presentation was part of the 2013 ASPCA/Maddie's® Shelter Medicine Conference.

Dr. Andrew Newmark spent 12 years in private practice in New York City and Rochester, NY before becoming the first staff shelter veterinarian at Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester, in 1999. He currently serves as Chief Veterinarian at Lollypop Farm. He provides surgical and medical care for the 12,000 animals admitted to the shelter yearly, as well as working with Humane Law Enforcement on animal cruelty cases. Dr. Newmark trains fourth year veterinary students and veterinary interns in surgery and shelter medicine. He has been a speaker at numerous local, state and regional conferences on zoonoses, veterinary forensics, animal cruelty and shelter medicine practices.
